Paul Cézanne

Rilke and Heidegger both understood Cézanne. Geography placed him between the Venetians [ Veronese, Titian, Tintoretto ] and the French [ Poussin ]. Time placed him among the the Epicureans via Lucretius. It is the latter which makes understanding what he accomplished so apparently difficult. He was pre- Christian, pre-Roman.
